چکیده

A ternary relation |̂ between subsets of the big model of a complete first-order theory T is called an independence relation if it satisfies a certain set of axioms. The primary example is forking in a simple theory, but o-minimal theories are also known to have an interesting independence relation. Our approach in this paper is to treat independence relations as mathematical objects worth studying. The main application is a better understanding of thorn-forking, which turns out to be closely related to modular pairs in the lattice of algebraically closed sets.

Thorn-forking as Local Forking

We introduce the notion of a preindependence relation between subsets of the big model of a complete first-order theory, an abstraction of the properties which numerous concrete notions such as forking, dividing, thorn-forking, thorn-dividing, splitting or finite satisfiability share in all complete theories. We examine the relation between four additional axioms (extension, local character, fu...

Thorn-forking in continuous logic

We study thorn forking and rosiness in the context of continuous logic. We prove that the Urysohn sphere is rosy (with respect to finitary imaginaries), providing the first example of an essentially continuous unstable theory with a nice notion of independence. In the process, we show that a real rosy theory which has weak elimination of finitary imaginaries is rosy with respect to finitary ima...

Consistent Amalgamation for Þ-forking Alf Onshuus and Clifton Ealy

This result follows straight from the geometric properties of þ-forking and it is nowhere near the independence theorem (which we will call “independent amalgamation”) one has in simple theories. In [?], Kim proved that the only independence relation satisfying symmetry, local character, transitivity and the independence theorem was forking in a simple theory; since there are well known example...

Geometric Structures with a Dense Independent Subset

We generalize the work of [13] on expansions of o-minimal structures with dense independent subsets, to the setting of geometric structures. We introduce the notion of an H-structure of a geometric theory T , show that H-structures exist and are elementarily equivalent, and establish some basic properties of the resulting complete theory T , including quantifier elimination down to “H-bounded” ...
